Department of Geography, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056 ([email protected]). Abstract Remote sensing techniques have been widely used to map fire scars in the western United States, but have not been thoroughly tested in the eastern portion of the country. In this study, a 1998 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image and a 1999 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM1) image were used to test different image enhancements and classification algorithms for mapping wildfire scars in Ocala National Forest, Florida. Single-date analysis was conducted using the 1999 image, while both images were used to complete multi-temporal analysis. Both singleand multi-date datasets were classified using a traditional method (maximum likelihood classification: MLC) and a non-parametric technique (classification and regression trees: CART). Comparison of all techniques showed that MLC of a single image (1999) resulted in high accuracy compared to the other methods and that principal components analysis (PCA) and multitemporal PCA provided the best spectral separability between burned and unburned areas.

Factors Affecting Florida Scrub-Jay Nest Survival on Ocala National Forest, Florida
One of the main populations of the Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens), a federally threatened species, occurs on Ocala National Forest, Florida. We determined the nest daily survival rate (DSR) of 474 nests of Florida scrub-jays in stands subject to sand pine reforestation management after timber harvesting or wildfire on Ocala National Forest. We used the information-theoretic approac...
متن کاملScaled Chrysophyeeae and Synurophyeeae from Florida, U.S.A.: VI. Observations on the flora from waterbodies in the Ocala National Forest
Thirty-two taxa of silica-scaled Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae are reported from waterbodies in the Ocala National Forest, Florida, U.S.A. Many of the lakes in the Ocala area are poorly buffered and low in both pH and specific conductivity. The organisms observed were clearly differentially distributed over a pH gradient, with the majority of species being typical of acidic localities. Sixtee...

Sand pine (I-‘inu.r c/trrr.srr) scrub is adapted to, and regenerated by, periodic stantl-rcplnccment wildfire, which consumch the understory and kills the overstay. The heat of the fire opens the serotinous cones of’ Ocala sand pine (P. c~/nu.srr var. c/tr~c.sc/), releasing quantities of seed that reestablish the overstory, while the understory regenerates by sproutin, (1 or from soil-stored se...
متن کاملDescription of a new species of the diatom genus Brachysira (Bacillariophyta), Brachysira gravida sp. nov. from the Ocala National Forest, Florida, U.S.A
The diatom Brachysira gravida Shayler & Siver sp. nov. is described from an oligotrophic, acidic, freshwater lake in the Ocala National Forest in north-central Florida, U.S.A. The richness of Brachysira was previously investigated to reveal that the genus is both abundant and morphologically diverse in this region of Florida and is therefore of particular taxonomic interest. Valves of Brachysir...
متن کاملPotential of Landsat-8 spectral indices to estimate forest biomass
Forest ecosystems are among the largest terrestrial carbon reservoirs on our planet earth thus playing a vital role in global carbon cycle. Presently, remote sensing techniques provide proper estimates of forest biomass and quantify carbon stocks. The present study has explored Landsat-8 sensor product and evaluated its application in biomass mapping and estimation. The specific objectives were...
